The Gift of a Caring Community

Austral Garden Route Cooperative Members -Our Caring Community
After a hard day's work, our Cooperative members celebrate the green roof construction of our outdoor kitchen and workshop.

As I explained in my previous post, I was very impressed by the questions asked during my meeting with the social assistant and psychologist following my first chemotherapy session.

'Will you have help when you get home, like family, social, or religious groups?'

The social assistant asked, recognizing that I am no spring chicken and Konomi is now considered legally blind.

'We have very good friends, a lot younger than us,' I said, 'They often help.'

This was proven so very true the moment we got off the bus to meet Marcelo. He drove us home and carried our bags up the hill, and the next day he went to the village and shopped for us.

Today, friends Leo and Chocman transplanted a three-meter-tall apple tree and chopped firewood, while Juanito rewired and renewed the sockets for a light unit that had failed the night before.

With our friends, we created a cooperative society a few years ago to advance, among other things, the gift of a caring community. It seems to be working very well indeed!

The oncology department advised me to keep a 'chemotherapy diary'.
